Artist Statement
I have always been intrigued by emotions and what causes them. When I was younger, I had a hard time expressing how I was feeling and reading how other people felt. Now I try to understand and express emotions in and through my work. I am overwhelmed by negative emotions on a daily basis, but something small and seemingly insignificant always seems to pop up that brings a spark of joy and helps me out of that funk. It could be a texture, a small plant, a certain shape of a cup, or something else altogether.
My work is centered on small things that bring me a personal joy, whether it is a technique I use on the clay, a small decoration, a texture that feels nice, or a form that feels good in my hands. The clay allows me to put my thought and feelings into it, whatever form the clay takes on. My works invite those who view or use them to contemplate what sparks joy in themselves. Whether it be through the surface texture, a simple change in the form, the glazing, or something else entirely.
